When you're preparing images for professional printing, resolution is the single most important factor that determines quality. Here's everything you need to know about getting print-ready images.

What is DPI?

DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. It's a measurement of how many dots of ink a printer places on each inch of paper. The higher the DPI, the more detailed and crisp your printed image will appear.

  • 72 DPI: Standard screen resolution (monitors)
  • 150 DPI: Draft quality print
  • 300 DPI: Professional print quality (the industry standard)
  • 600+ DPI: High-end print jobs

Why 300 DPI Matters

At 300 DPI, each square inch of your image contains 90,000 dots of color information. This creates smooth gradients and sharp text that looks professional.

At 72 DPI (screen resolution), you'd need to print at about 1/4 the size to maintain the same visual quality. An image that looks great on your monitor can become blurry and pixelated when printed.

How to Check Your Image Resolution

On Windows:

  1. Right-click the image file
  2. Select "Properties"
  3. Click the "Details" tab
  4. Look for "Horizontal Resolution" and "Vertical Resolution"

On Mac:

  1. Open the image in Preview
  2. Press Cmd+I
  3. Look for "Dimensions" in the info panel

What If Your Image Is Low Resolution?

If you have a low-resolution image, you might be tempted to just "increase the DPI" in Photoshop. This doesn't work.

Increasing the DPI without adding real detail just spreads the existing pixels further apart—you can't create new information out of nothing.

Your options:

  1. Find a higher resolution original (best solution)
  2. Use our 300 DPI Converter to prepare what you have
  3. Accept that the image may need to be printed smaller
